Communion Bread Recipe
This is the recipe for Altar Guild members (or anyone else) who wishes to provide bread for our weekly Eucharist.
Makes 8-10 loaves.
- 2 cups lukewarm water
- 2 packages yeast
- 6 tablespoons honey
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 5 cups whole wheat flour
- 3 tablespoons oil
Measure water into mixing bowl, add yeast, stir until dissolved.
Stir in honey, oil and salt. Add unsifted flour.
Mix with hands, adding a tablespoon of water at a time until dough completely comes together. Knead 5 minutes.
Let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 2 hours or until doubled in size.
Divide into 4 pieces. Knead each piece 1 minute on a floured board. Roll 1/4 inch thick.
Cut into circles using a coffee can or other 6-7 inch circle. Score the top with a cross using a sharp knife (do not cut all the way through).
Place on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. Cool completely and place each loaf in a sandwich bag.
Place all bags in a gallon freezer bag dated and labeled "Communion Bread;" place the bag in the kitchen freezer. Thank you for being part of this ministry!
